Famous and Fun Hockey Songs
Hockey play lists will vary from one city to another and from one arena to another but good hockey music always shares the intensity of the game, the attitude of the players, and the characteristics of the team. So here are some of the famous and fun hockey songs common to many arenas.
The absolute most famous hockey song is Stompin Tom Connors “The Hockey Song,” which has become almost a second Canadian anthem and it is played regularly at Canadian hockey games while the fans sing along. Although the song appeared back in 1973 it was actually in 1992 that it gained its popularity at an Ottawa Senators game. Suddenly it was being played throughout the NHL.
From Stompin Tom Connors to the Tragically Hip there have been some great hockey songs written that truly capture the spirit of the players and the fans.
Fifty Mission Cap by the Tragically Hip is a song about Bill Barilko who disappeared during the summer but his last goal won the Leafs the cup.
Hockey Night In Canada by the Shuffle Demons is based off the television theme song with a jazz take.
Hockey by Jane Siberry is a song that depicts a picture of a kid’s hockey game.
The Ballad of Wendel Clark by the Rheostatics is gonna make you cry if you are a true Maple Leafs’ fan. It’s perfect! Don’t’ forget there is part 1 and 2.
Gordie and My Old Man by the Grievous Angels is about Gordie and his old man watching the Blackhawks on a Saturday night.
The Zamboni Song by Gear Daddies is all about the dream to drive a Zamboni. It’s a favorite with the kids and an all time arena pick.
There’s plenty of other hockey song favorites such as Trust Us on the Hockey, The Guy In the Hockey Magazine, Can’t Get Enough Hockey, The Hockey Game, Down To Speedy Creek, and No One Does It Better than Bru to name just a few.
But wait many of the hockey song hits at the arena aren’t necessarily about the game but instead their about the atmosphere. We Will Rock You by Queen is an all time arena hit, as is Rock’n Roll Part II by Gary Glitter, Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye, and of course the original Hockey Night In Canada Theme Song.
Now for those of you that fin Stompin Tom’s “The Hockey Song” the all time favorite you aren’t alone! And for those of you that haven’t heard the song or don’t recall it, here are the lyrics.
FULL LYRICS OF The Hockey Song (Stompin' Tom Connors):
Hello out there, were on the air
it's hockey night tonight!
The tension grows,
the whistle blows,
and the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps,
and the players bump,
and the fans all go insane.
Someone roars:
"Bobby Scores!"
At the good old hockey game!
Oh!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!
Second Period.
Where players dash,
with skates a-flash,
the home team trails behind.
But they grab the puck,
and go bursting up,
and their down across the line.
They storm the crease,
like bumblebees,
and they travel like a burning flame.
We see them slide the puck inside,
its a one one hockey game!
Oh!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!
Third Period.
Last game in the play-offs too.
Oh take me where, the hockey players,
face off down the rink,
And the Stanley Cup,
is all filled up,
for the champs who win the drink!
Now the final flick,
of a hockey stick,
and a one gigantic scream:
"THE PUCK IS IN! THE HOME TEAM WINS!"
At the good old hockey game
(repeat 3 times)
OH!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!
So when it comes to hockey songs you’ve got plenty of choices. The question remains what’s your favorite?
